The Tayana 52 is a 52.42ft cutter designed by Robert Perry and built in fiberglass by Ta Yang Yacht Building Co. Ltd. between 1983 and 1991.

The Tayana 52 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is good. There is a good water supply range.

Tayana 52 review: perry’s sweetest sheer.

tayana 52 sailboat data

The Tayana 52 is one of Robert Perry’s favorite designs – self-proclaimed “sweetest sheer I ever drew.” Her history is in many ways a snapshot of the evolution of the sailboat industry over the past 30 years. Her changes (less teak, the addition of a sugar scoop stern, switch from Perkins to Yanmar diesel, etcetera) mirror those of other manufacturers. The design debuted in 1983 and is ostensibly still in production like most of Ta Yang’s yachts including the 42 and 55. They still have the tooling and will make one if someone wants. The newest hull seen on brokerage market is from 2001. She is a bluewater machine and one of the most charming Taiwanese yachts ever built. If you are looking for an aft cockpit, three stateroom sailing machine for a fair price, I highly recommend you consider this design.

tayana 52 sailboat data

First Impressions Your first impression will depend on whether your subject has the aft or center cockpit mold. In contrast to what you might expect, the aft cockpit version out numbers the center by my estimate five to one. Today, demand clearly favors the rarer center cockpit version. To my eye, the aft cockpit is more aesthetically pleasing. The sleek cabintrunk couples with the sexy sheerline in a way that makes your knees wobble. The center cockpit has a more modern cabintrunk that does not stir the same passion although it does make for superior accommodations. Underneath, she features a long fin keel with separate skeg hung rudder. Above the main spar is surprisingly short at 61-feet.

Construction Tayana builds their yachts tougher than cobs, and the 52 is no exception. The hull is hand laid fiberglass cored with closed cell PVC foam while the deck is balsa cored. The mast is keel stepped. Many 52’s especially those from the 1980’s come with teak decking with all its mixed blessings. Comparing the joinery on Tayana yachts over the years, the amount of teak down below has understandably decreased over the years. While 52’s from the 1980’s and early 1990’s have solid teak staving a-plenty, the most recent models have mostly teak veneer. In an ever more environmentally conscious world I think this is a good thing.

On Deck and Down Below The teak decking is solely along the side decks on the Tayana 52’s I have seen. Along with the teak caprail, she has just enough brightwork to keep that classic look. The fore and side decks are wide and easy to maneuver around. The aft cockpit on most versions is seaworthy with large scuppers, a deep well, and a stout bridge. On post-1990 versions, Tayana often glassed on a ledge to her rocket ship stern. Down the companionway you are immediately immersed in a symphony of honey colored Taiwanese teak. The exact layout is difficult to talk about as these custom built yachts have so many variations. There are anywhere from two to four staterooms and one to three heads. A notable feature is the way Tayana composed the partial bulkheads with large walkthroughs.

tayana 52 sailboat data

Engine and Underway The engine was originally the 85 HP Perkins 4-236 in 1983. In 1991, Tayana switched to the 110 HP Yanmar. Sometimes you will see 52’s repowered with a 140 HP Yanmar. Where the yacht really shines is under sail where her beautiful lines prove they are fast as well. R. Perry designed her to sail, and sail she does easily handling 25 knots and reeling off 180 nautical mile days. She is a classic offshore yacht by the Ta Yang yard whose name means “big ocean” in Mandarin; the brand name, Tayana, means “belongs to big ocean” and is an appropriate label for these yachts.

Conclusion The Tayana 52 is one of Bob Perry’s favorites and deservedly so. Highlights include her fine light teak interior and fast, sweeping hull lines. On the brokerage market, 10 are available with prices ranging from $189,000 to $419,000. Watch for the center cockpit variations and ones with a glassed on swim platform. And ask for an interior layout because you never know what the accommodations will be like. A place for more information is the Tayana Owners Group (TOG) which is the largest sailboat owners group with many happy owners of Perry’s 52-footer.

A sturdy bluewater cruiser gets the upgrades it needs for a once - in - a - lifetime trip

tayana 52 sailboat data

After many years of dreaming about a great sailing trip, our sailboat kitty was finally big enough to get a boat that we could really stretch our legs on. The rough plan is to take a yearlong sabbatical, head across the Atlantic in late May, spend the summer in the Western Med, the winter in the Caribbean and be back in the office before anyone realizes they don't need me.

We could spend about $275,000 on a boat, assuming we can get most of it back when we sell. The cost-recovery requirement ruled out a newer boat, so I knew we were looking for a fully depreciated cruising boat from the late 1980s. The goal was to find a good quality cruising boat, take care of a few minor items and go sailing.

Our design requirements were simple: A sweet motion in a seaway, room for guests and lot of storage. That equated to a big boat, likely in the 50-foot range.

A lot of good-quality boats were built in the mid-to-late 1980s. The dynamic duo of Bob Perry and Ta Yang Yacht Building was at full speed then, producing the Tayana line of boats. I particularly liked the Tayana 52 and wanted to find a clean one for our trip.

The Tayana 52 is a really sweet boat, drawn by Perry after his huge success with the Tayana 37. The 52 is fast and really beautiful, so it's no surprise that Perry says the boat has the "sweetest sheer" he had ever drawn. The boat is available with an aft or center cockpit. The rig is a big powerful sloop, with an inner forestay for a staysail. There is plenty of room down below and the joinerwork is first rate, like many of the Taiwan boats of this era. She is safe and secure on deck, with wide side decks protected by a tall raised bulwark.

I searched all over the country and found my boat in southern Maryland. I was willing to undertake quite a bit of system refit, but I wanted a boat with good cosmetics and a solid engine. I found a 1987 center-cockpit model with a fresh flag blue Awlgrip job and a Yanmar with just 600 hours. The interior cosmetics were very good, the electronics, sails, and rigging were serviceable and the other systems were in good shape.

The boat was listed for $230,000, but after a bit of negotiation I got the boat for $212,000. That left about $60,000 for the refit, although I certainly didn't want to spend it if I didn't have to.

The boat came with serviceable sails, but not good enough for a transatlantic crossing. I consulted with Tom Pease of North Sails Midwest to design a good package.

I wanted a bulletproof main with three sets of reef points, since we did not plan to carry a storm trysail. Our boat came with lazy jacks and a stackpack-style boom cover, so the sail needed full battens to give it a nice shape but also guide the sail into the boom cover. Tom suggested two fabric options with different constructions. The basic sail was built with heavy Dacron fabric, North NorDac, and a crosscut construction where the sail is built with panels that go diagonally across the sail. A better option used a laminated Dyneema cloth with a tri-radial construction, this construction orients the cloth to better hold the sail shape over time. I couldn't justify the better cloth and construction and went with a Dacron main costing $7,700.

We also wanted to carry a furling 120% genoa on our existing furler. To effectively furl the sail, we specified a luff pad to allow the sail to maintain shape as it was rolled up. Of course, we had Sunbrella UV covers and spreader patches. We had a similar discussion around sail material and construction and again went with a Dacron crosscut sail due to cost considerations. This sail cost us $8,600.

Our boat was rigged with an inner staysail furler, and the staysail combined with a second or third reef will be our heavy weather package. Pease specified a very robust staysail of just 321 square feet. We don't plan to furl this sail so we did not go with a luff pad. Again, we went with the Dacron sail for $3,200.

We plan to spend the summer in the Med and the winds there can be fluky-typically very heavy or very light. With European fuel dock prices around $10 per gallon, we want to be able to sail on those light days. Pease suggested a North code zero on a roller furler, which is a medium-sized flat cut asymmetrical that we can fly from a continuous-line furler. To maintain shape in this sail we chose an aramid fabric in a tri-radial construction. The sail is built around an anti-torsion luff rope so we should be able to pin it right on to a line drive furler. This sail cost $8,700.

To make that almost 1,200-square-foot sail easy to handle we choose a Colligo CN5 continuous line furler. Our application was a little oversized for the furler but we plan to use this sail for lighter air days and will take our chances. The furler cost us $1,600 and we spent another $400 on a furling, line guides and some accessories.

The mast and standing rigging appeared to be in really good shape but we could not document its age to our insurance company. To make the insurance company happy and to play it safe, we opted to replace the wire and swage terminals. Unfortunately, time was not on our side, so we opted to have this work done in the yard, costing us $7,500.

As the yard was working on the rig, we gave a close eye to the running rigging. The sheets looked good, but the halyards were a little tired. We wanted low stretch halyards and new shackles to go along with our new sails. Four new halyards for the main, genoa and staysail in covered Vectran and a Dacron spinnaker halyard were $3,000 from Mauri Pro Sailing.

We planned some long downwind passages, most notably the westbound passage across the Atlantic. The boat came with full spinnaker gear, but we had no intention of flying a poled spinnaker on a 52-foot boat in bluewater. We opted to remove the spinnaker and pole from the boat and mount a whisker pole on the spinnaker track. The pole would let us fly the 120% genoa downwind and, as the wind piped up we could roll a little in, and if it blew a lot we could roll it all in and leave the pole set. This is a true low stress to downwind sail with decent performance. A whisker pole for this boat is big, it is 15 feet collapsed and will extend to 27 feet. In aluminum, the pole would be a lot to handle, and we couldn't afford a full carbon fiber pole. Luckily Forespar makes a 50/50 pole, with the inboard end in aluminum and the outboard end in carbon fiber, a nice compromise. The pole and accessories cost us $3,600.

We had a good deal of paint built up on the bottom of the boat and decided to do a bottom job. We had the boat soda blasted to get it back to clean fiberglass. From there we laid on five coats of Pettit Protect high-build epoxy primer and 3 coats of Pettit Ultima SR-40 ablative bottom paint.. We did the paint work ourselves and we were able pull this off for just $7,000.

With our boat in good shape, a great trip awaits. Two Atlantic crossings, a culture filled summer in the Med and a wonderful tropical winter in the Caribbean. I am not going to want to go back to work.

Tayana 52'

A gorgeous example of Robert Perry’s best sailing yacht designs, Serenity is a great choice for a couple or a small family looking for a lifetime of short or long-distance ocean cruising. Having already circled the globe two times, this 16-year-old Tayana 52’ still looks good as new and has been well maintained by the previous owners.

Since 2021, Serenity has been given more than $125,000 in upgrades, including new finishes, a new radar, plotter, and wind transducer, dodger and bimini tops, and many other improvements. Fitted with electric halyard winches and boom and roller furling headsails, much of the Serenity ’s sailing can now be done with the push of a button. Port and starboard mast pulpits allow for safe work at any heel angle. A sail locker, located just aft of the staysail tack, can accommodate the spinnaker, numerous lines, and fenders while under way.

The center cockpit layout has Edson pedestal steering, a single-lever shift and throttle controls, comfortable bench-seat cushioning, and full instrumentation. A suite of Garmin electronics was installed at the helm last year, along with Raymarine speed and depth displays and autopilot. A teak Edson table can be folded out for outdoor dining, but the entire cockpit can be completely covered with canvas when the weather moves in.

For entertainment, the boat is equipped with a Fusion stereo interfaced to the Garmin displays, a Samsung 42″ TV in the salon, a Denon surround receiver, a Sony Bluray player, Bose speakers, and a 12V outlet for charging tablets or phones.

Belowdecks, the interior is flooded with light and air from openable portholes and five deck hatches. The interior salon has a circular dinette and dining table to port and a settee to starboard. The navigation station, aft of the settee, features a raised chart table, a seat, and access to most controls and gauges. On the port side of the interior passageway, the linear galley is equipped with a gimballed, three-burner Force 10 propane stove, a microwave, double stainless steel sinks, a refrigerator and freezer.

The forward stateroom has a queen-sized berth, an en suite head, and a separate shower. The master stateroom, located aft, features a walkaround queen bed, plus port and starboard seats, and a Samsung 24″ TV. plus a large head a separate stall shower.

For windless days, Serenity is powered by Yanmar 10-hp engine, capable of reaching 6.6 knots, as well as a bow thruster for docking assists. The aft deck also secures an Achilles 11′ fiberglass RIB. A new transom shower has been added, with hot and cold fresh water, and six solar panels overhead. Two seats are built into the aft pulpit, plus two more seats atop the arch, providing ample space for fishing, grilling, or socializing.

1992 TAYANA 52 Aft Cockpit

  • Description

Seller's Description

On The Road Again is a 1992 Tayana 52, one of Robert Perry’s favorite designs. She is the kind of yacht that racing sailors choose to cruise. Blending a low freeboard with a long waterline and a moderate 15’ beam, the Tayana 52 is one of the most attractive vessels of its kind. Typically sailed as a cutter rig, the Tayana 52 is remarkably sea kindly for such a powerful hull and sail plan. Tayana 52’s have circumnavigated and won major offshore races. This vessel is a project boat, and she will need a lot of work to restore her to her previous condition, when she was outfitted to cruise the South Pacific. On The Road Again has a copper bottom and she is in the water ready for survey and sea-trial. she has a full complement of sails that have been stored off the boat, including spinnaker with sock, Genoa, and Staysail. She will need a new Mainsail, and a Northern Lights generator. On The Road Again is available to see by appointment in Wilmington NC. Please see the full specs for all the details and photos.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  1. TAYANA 52

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

  2. Tayana 52

  4. Tayana 52

The Tayana 52 is a really sweet boat, drawn by Perry after his huge success with the Tayana 37. The rig is a big powerful sloop, with an inner forestay for a staysail.

Tayana. builds their yachts tougher than cobs, and the 52 is no exception. The hull is hand laid berglass cored with closed cell PVC foam while the deck is balsa cored. The mast is keel stepped. Many 52ʼs especially those from the 1980ʼs come with teak decking with all its mixed blessings. Comparing the joinery on Tayana yachts over
