A Breath of Fresh Air

Combining traditional Indonesian aesthetics with modern design stylings, Vela is unlike any other phinisi on the water. Celebrating Indonesian craftsmanship and local materials, she is the perfect blend of regional traditions with luxury yacht finesse.

Vela is one of the few charter yachts available with two master cabins above deck, offering uninterrupted views of the stunning islands as they pass by.

Accommodations

Every detail onboard Vela has been crafted with the goal of creating a refreshing feel. Light colors with neutral accents bring the outside indoors, creating a breath of fresh air throughout. Six elegant suites await with space for up to 12 guests and two children. Two master cabins are uniquely situated above deck, one on the main deck while the other sits atop the bridge, benefitting from a private terrace to allow the morning sun to greet you as you sip your morning coffee and prepare for another fantastic day exploring the islands. The remaining cabins are located below deck, furnished with luxurious Italian fabrics and locally, sustainably sourced teak furniture. Each suite features its own private ensuite, decorated in terracotta produced in Ubud, marble accents and Philippe Starck-designed fittings.

Dining and Relaxing

Vela’s executive chef and his team are ready to welcome you, offering the most delectable local dishes, while also catering to any and all dietary requirements, or Western menu requests. They will curate meals according to your group’s preferences while utilizing fresh and local ingredients. From how you take your morning coffee, to your favorite nightcap and every meal and snack in between, Vela’s crew is ready to wow you with their service and attention to detail. With an abundance of space available throughout, whether you want to enjoy your meals in the formal dining room, barefoot on the beach under the stars, or on the ample foredeck taking in the passing sights, is up to you.

Explore the Undiscovered

No trip to Indonesia is complete without getting up close and personal with its unique marine biodiversity. No two dives are ever the same and adventurous guests may gaze in wonder at the sight of manta rays, sea turtles and sharks while marine photographers will notice seahorses, mantis shrimps and nudibranchs hidden in pristine coral gardens. Vela’s qualified dive instructors are trained to help beginners achieve their PADI certification onboard and a nitrox compressor allows experienced divers to make the most of each dive and shorten surface intervals. For those that prefer to explore above the water, a plethora of water toys await. A crew member will be happy to take you waterskiing or wakeboarding behind the tender to find quiet bays hidden from view. When it’s time to slow down, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are available for scenic tours or to head onto the beach for a little sunbathing and exploring.

A Personalized Experience

Vela’s fantastic crew prides itself on its unrivaled local knowledge and being able to put together the perfect itinerary for your group. Whether you want to spend your days diving, seeking out the marine life that calls this place home, enjoying land-based excursions like hiking and bird watching, or taking in a massage or other wellness service provided by the crew, Vela and her crew have you covered. Vela’s dedicated activities manager and his team work with knowledgeable local experts to craft bespoke tours suited to our guests’ preferences.

SAILING YACHT A

SAILING YACHT A is an exceptionally unique 2017 build by Nobiskrug, measuring 142.80m (468'6"ft).

She is the ultimate embodiment of German superyachts built for the 22 nd  century.

Measuring almost 143 m and a gross tonnage of about 12,600 GT, she became one of the most impressive PYC superyachts in the world in terms of design and technology.

She is one of the world’s largest and the most advanced superyachts with unique features such as an underwater observation pod, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and state-of- the-art navigation systems. The luxury sailing yacht's three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world. The mainmast towers 100 m above the waterline.

The smooth, lustrous silver metallic surfaces and nearly invisible windows give this yacht a futuristic look. World-renowned Philippe Starck created this unconventional design, which challenges the expectations of conventional aesthetics.  Nobiskrug high-tech building  technology made this fascinating design possible.

Steel hull and steel superstructure with high-tech composite fashion plates that can be formed into any shape or size, a technology Nobiskrug has developed during the past 15 years in co-operation with classification societies and special subcontractors.

Thanks to her striking looks and innovative technology SAILING YACHT A was unquestionably the most anticipated delivery of 2017. She definitely changes the upcoming landscape of the Nobiskrug fleet as well as the future of supersail.

“Born from the desire of the owner to push the boundaries of engineering and challenge the status quo of the industry, ‘SAILING YACHT A’ is undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects Nobiskrug has ever been involved in.” Holger Kahl, Nobiskrug Managing Director.

This Futuristic Italian Yacht Lets You Project Movies onto Its Sails

Project Vela Sailing Yacht with movie projected on sail

In Italian, “ vela ” means sail—a fitting moniker for this 262-foot sailing-yacht project that includes a massive 20,182-square-foot sail plan (complemented by a hybrid engine). The sails are mounted on two stately DynaRig masts (think the groundbreaking 2006 Maltese Falcon ) positioned in a way that centers their weight in the middle of the yacht.

The craft’s steel hull is shaped by sleek, soft lines and is paired to an aluminum superstructure that offers up all kinds of outdoor spaces for maximizing onboard recreation and relaxation, such as a water-level beach club with bar and the main deck with another bar and a sunbed. A wellness center with a spa and a pool, as well as an indoor cinema lounge, reside on the upper deck, and the sundeck plays host to another, larger pool and requisite sunbeds where guests can lounge while watching movies projected on the sails of the front mast.

“When I designed the exterior, I [wanted] to make something simple,” says designer Gianmarco Cardia. “I imagined the body of Vela molded by the wind—without sharp edges—and characterized by flowing lines.”

Cardia created an indoor-outdoor experience via electrical glass doors that optimize the movement between exterior deck space and interior living space. The upper-deck lounge houses a piano bar and an additional cinema. Cardia sees this space as the place to party. Recovery from said festivities can be achieved via the fitness center just aft of the wheelhouse.

“I think that the terraces on the rear part of the upper deck are the best areas to spend time on board—you can enjoy a beautiful panorama while dining alfresco just near the upper-deck lounge,” enthuses Cardia.

Project Vela houses a main-deck master suite—with fold-down balconies and its own hot tub—as well as four guest staterooms belowdecks. Eight en-suite cabins for a crew of 16 reside on the lower deck. Also belowdecks are a beauty salon and, moving forward toward the bow, a wine cellar. It is here, in the lower-deck lobby, that the spiral staircase circling a glass elevator connects to the main-deck saloon with dining area and a private conference room.

“The spaces are linked to allow flowing movements on board, which is fundamental, especially for the crew,” says Cardia. “The finishings are classic but contemporary, and the colors are inspired by the villas on the coast of Sardinia, which is my land.”

Although the hull has not been engineered yet, Cardia believes his Project Vela will reach a top speed of 21 knots when using both sail and engine propulsion.

Vela sails into high demand in Indonesia

  • August 24, 2023

A stunning six-cabin phinisi delivered in 2022, the 50m Vela is already in high demand for memorable charters in Indonesia, available through Camper & Nicholsons. Words: Julia Zaltzman Photos: Camper & Nicholsons

Built in Sulawesi, Vela was launched in 2022

In the 20th century, phinisis were built by the seafaring cultures of South Sulawesi to carry exotic spices, sandalwood and textiles through the ancient spice trading route. Today, new phinisis are primarily Indonesian charter yachts built for cruising, diving and recreational activities.

Although the onboard pursuits may have altered, the distinctive architecture and boatbuilding skills of the UNESCO-recognised Bugis Makassar community have not, resulting in striking new builds, such as the 50m Vela , which offers a harmonious blend of ancient craftsmanship and enchanting cruising opportunities.

Vela is among the newest phinisis operating charters

Accommodating up to 12 adults and two children, Vela is available for charter throughout Indonesia with Camper & Nicholsons. The boat’s cruising itinerary takes in Raja Ampat in the winter, where guests swim with manta rays during drift and reef dives in richly biodiverse waters.

In the summer months, Bali and the Komodo National Park offer shoreside sightings of Komodo dragons and whale shark encounters, while the option of exploring the famed Spice Islands in between seasons allows for treks into rainforests in search of the elusive Bird of Paradise.

Most dining takes place outdoors, such as on the foredeck

There’s also the option of exploring off-the-beaten-track destinations in Flores, east of Komodo, and the Alor archipelago further east.

Vela (meaning shoreline) is one of the largest phinisis on water. Built by Pak Haji Abdullah in 2022 at its Sulawesi shipyard, the boat successfully unites old construction techniques with a modern offering.

Its two hotelier owners, Dimitri Tran and Adrien Portier, have brought their hospitality expertise to the water with the aim of redefining the phinisi charter experience.

View of the bow from the bridge

“We wanted to build a boat that feels like it belongs in Indonesia, but to standards that are more comparable to a superyacht in the Mediterranean,” says Tran, who celebrated Vela ’s delivery by enjoying a 10-day Indonesian cruise with Portier and friends, with fireworks and beach barbecues among highlights.

“Modern phinisis are powered by an engine with the sails kept for their aesthetic beauty, but we wanted Vela ’s sails to be more than decoration and for the boat to be able to sail whenever wanted.”

BUILT TO SAIL

Designed by naval architect Tresno Seery, Vela is a tall phinisi and boasts a large sail surface with 650sqm of off-white gaff-rigged sails.

Vela, phinisi, superyacht, Indonesia, Sulawesi, Camper & Nicholsons, Bugis Makassar, UNESCO, recognised, Raja Ampat, Bali, Komodo National Park, Spice Islands, Pak Haji Abdullah, Dimitri Tran, Adrien Portier, Hermès, Dedar Milano, Rubelli, Contardi Italia, Olivari, Cutipol, Axor, Gaya

The aft deck has wraparound seating and a covered dining table

The sleek, pronounced hull is made from durable ironwood – which ensures good seakeeping in rough, high seas – and a superstructure primarily crafted from teak.

The boat’s 32m-high masts and classic schooner rigging with winches, booms and gaffs set her apart from other phinisi yachts and deliver impressive sailing capabilities that showcase true artisanal skill. A double keel gives the boat weight under the waterline, while the implementation of a marine cooling system – another notable difference – further enhances guests’ onboard comfort.

The lounge offers views through large windows

Vela ’s spars are made of carbon, but the masts are crafted from steel. The main mast doubles as a crane to lift the yacht’s toys and tenders in and out of the water. It eliminates the need for a separate hydraulic crane on deck, freeing up the exterior areas for dining, relaxing and socialising, as well as enhancing the efficiency and convenience of the boat’s charter operations.

The opportunities for fun on the water are boundless. In addition to two Zodiac tenders, the yacht carries a fantastic selection of water toys including two Yamaha jet-skis, waterskis, wakeboards, paddleboards, surfboards, kayaks and various towables.

Indoor dining in the saloon

For guests keen to explore beneath the waves under the expert guidance of Vela ’s dedicated diving instructor, there are two Bauer air compressors, a Nitrox generator and 17 sets of diving gear for an autonomous set-up in even the most remote areas.

RESPONSIBLE STYLE

Back on board, guests unwind at the hands of Vela ’s trained masseuse or toast bright-red sunsets from the stargazing deck with signature cocktails, crafted by the onboard mixologist.

Solid teak furniture produced by local artisans using teak from sustainably managed sources is found throughout the yacht. In addition to the yacht’s zero-plastic policy, reef-safe bath and body products made with natural ingredients and bamboo toothbrushes are offered in respect of Indonesia’s delicate cruising environment and responsible charter offerings.

Likewise, the interior is both refined and contemporary with carefully sourced materials chosen by the owners from overseas. There are white linen and fabrics by brands such as Hermès, Dedar Milano and Rubelli, reading lamps by Contardi Italia, brass door handles made in Italy by Olivari, and silverware produced by Cutipol in Portugal.

The large VIP suite is on the main deck

Among Vela ’s standout features are the six en-suite guest cabins, which include the full-beam bridge deck master with a private terrace, and the similarly-sized VIP on the main deck, both offering panoramic views out to sea.

Each cabin features a bathroom with Axor fittings and dressed in white marble and green tiles made by Balinese ceramics specialist Gaya. Hand-woven plant fabrics, traditional kimonos and decorative throw pillows made from natural plant-based indigo add an elegant touch.

Artworks have been sourced from leading galleries

A formal saloon is the yacht’s only indoor dining option, with nearly all meals taking place outdoors on either the main deck forward or aft. The chef’s culinary skills are far-reaching and tailored to guests’ preferences – nasi goreng with a side serving of sambal one night, mushroom risotto the next.

For the yacht’s 15 artworks, the owners collaborated with three of Indonesia’s leading contemporary galleries. “Our mandate was to showcase up-and-coming talent and highlight what Indonesian contemporary art is today,” Tran says.

Vela’s six en-suite guest cabins include two doubles in the hull

As Vela was built with charter in mind, Tran and Portier now have their sights set on further phinisi builds, smaller in size to accommodate couples and families, but always striking a careful balance between old and new. And with over 15 charters already booked on Vela for 2023, their first build is already resonating with adventurous charter guests looking to enjoy an authentic slice of phinisi life.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Diving into Indonesia's secrets

Indonesia holds some of nature’s greatest underwater treasures and most pristine reef systems. For one local dive master, the chance to share those treasures with superyacht guests is more than just about making their holiday the experience of a lifetime.

The yawning stretch of Indonesia’s island chains offers countless opportunities for interacting with – and understanding better – life in, on and under the waves. Superyachts provide the ultimate platform for exploration in a land where resort hotels are few and far between and where the best spots can best be described as ‘remote’ – and that in turn offers opportunity not only for local craftsmen and crew, but also for guests to recognise the need for conservation alongside experiencing the thrill of diving in pristine waters.

One of those locals helping guests make the most of their time in Indonesia is Yoyok Hariawan, who began his diving career in 1988 on Lombok Island in Bali. After two years, he became a dive master, and a year later qualified as an instructor. He’s spent the best part of 20 years working as an instructor at Amanwana on Eastern Indonesia’s Moyo Island, including aboard Aman’s two yachts, the 32-metre custom coastal cruiser Amanikan (now named Mahodaya) and the flagship 52-metre custom two-masted phinisi Amandira, where he worked as a cruise director.

In 2023, he joined sailing yacht Vela , a 50-metre new-build phinisi that offers a harmonious blend of ancient craftsmanship and enchanting cruising opportunities. As activities manager, he takes charge of guest excursions such as trekking, wakeboarding, paddle boarding and kayaking. But as the sole diving instructor on board, his expertise lies in what happens below the waves.

Diving into Indonesia's secrets

Yoyok Hariawan

Hariawan stopped counting his dives after he reached 5,000. His love of the water stems from growing up by the sea, initially on the island of Java where earthly volcanoes and pre-historic jungles collide with stunning sandy beaches, before he moved as a child to Lombok. Yet, his long-standing career as a dive instructor came about by way of a professional mentorship during his mid-20s.

“I was working on a dive centre boat as a member of crew, and the British dive instructor asked me if I wanted to dive,” he says. “I told him that I wasn’t a good swimmer, but he supported me and encouraged me to still try. He took me to the swimming pool for my first dive and showed me how to breathe with diving equipment, before eventually taking me into open water. That was the start of something I love, and from that point my life and work changed forever. It wasn’t a conscious choice to become a diver, more of a happy accident.”

Yoyok’s ability to empathise with even the most nervous of novice divers is complemented by his gentle and warm nature. Softly spoken and always smiling, his expertise allows guests to complete their dive certification during their stay aboard Vela. Hariawan’s knowledge of Indonesia reaches far and wide. His dive itineraries are bolstered by his understanding of the surrounding area, from the Komodo National Park and Bali to Raja Ampat and beyond. The beauty of Vela (meaning shoreline) is that it cruises off the beaten path, heading for lesser known dives sites and snorkelling hot spots. The boat’s cruising itinerary takes in Raja Ampat in the winter, where drift and reef dives in richly biodiverse waters see guests swim with turtles and manta rays. In the summer months, Bali and the Komodo National Park offer shoreside sightings of Komodo dragons, while the option of exploring the famed Spice Islands in between seasons allows for treks into rainforests in search of the elusive Bird of Paradise.

Diving into Indonesia's secrets

Exterior of Vela

In April 2023, I had the privilege of joining Vela for a charter in Komodo. In Saleh Bay, Sumbawa, we anchored overnight and rose before the sun in the hope of swimming with whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea. “Nature is one thing you can’t guarantee, but if you’re lucky, you can be surrounded by up to 12 whale sharks at a time,” says Hariawan.

The Sumbanese fishermen spend all night aboard their Bagan boats, casting their small nets to catch pura pura (similar to perch). They believe sighting a whale shark brings them luck and they throw chunks of their fresh catch back into the sea as an offering. On our morning, three of the elegant creatures circled our tender while we swam alongside them. It’s the type of bucket list experience that only a superyacht charter affords, made possible by the communication between Vela’s crew and the local fisherman, and only accessible thanks to Vela’s setup.

I was lucky enough to also dive with Hariawan on two occasions during that trip, first at the northern tip of Komodo at Batu Moncho Point where pygmy blue whales are sometimes sighted, and later at the Golden Passage, just to the right of the Gili Islands. We spotted black tip reef shark, giant trevally, barracuda and porcupine pufferfish. Green and hawksbill turtles are plentiful, feeding on the soft coral. The large-lipped Napoleon wrasse is a sight to behold, but even the smaller yellow and striped fusilier, nippy triggerfish and oriental sweet lips make every dive a thrilling experience. With Hariawan as my guide, we avoided Komodo’s famed strong currents (including the ominously named site Shot Gun), instead gently drifting through a beautiful underwater world for an hour at a time.

Diving into Indonesia's secrets

Yoyok with author Julia Zaltzman

The top dive sites can often be crowded, especially during peak season. Having Hariawan’s local expertise allows for a more private and secluded experience at some of the best locations. Two decades since he first learned to dive, Hariawan’s passion for the ocean and yachting remains strong. “It’s a dream to work with a superyacht like Vela,” he says. “Dedicated dive boats have a rigorous regime with little opportunity to see the surrounding area, whereas charter yachts focus on the leisurely superyacht life. Guests wake in the morning for a sunrise dive, come back to a delicious breakfast laid out on the aft deck, maybe head off on a shore excursion before eating a gastronomic lunch prepared by the chef, and later heading out on a second dive. It’s a much slower, more relaxed pace with a focus on guest satisfaction.”

The 17,500 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago are a superyacht paradise, home to orangutans and orca whales, which government sanctioned conservation programmes are working hard to protect. By engaging superyacht guests in the preservation of wildlife, such as turtle tagging charters, and working to help educate and support surrounding communities through carefully regulated activities, it’s another example of how superyachts and their crew bring a positive impact to the waters they sail.

For Hariawan, having the opportunity to regularly dive and explore Indonesia’s diverse regions is something he never takes for granted. “We regularly spot giant green turtles in Komodo, which are much larger than turtles found in other parts of the world, and Raja Ampat remains largely untouched,” he enthuses. “We have a rare beauty above and below the water.”

superyacht a vela

È successo tutto in pochi minuti.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

L'imbarcazione

Jenna Ortega: «Quando torno a casa devo lavare i piatti.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

Related stories

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
