Princess Yachts has been taken over by a major American private equity firm in a deal which will take the Plymouth company “to the next level”. New York-headquartered KPS Capital Partners has entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Ltd, and said the investment will accelerate the company’s growth and innovation.

Existing shareholders will retain ownership in the company under the deal. Completion of the transaction is expected by the end of March.

KPS runs a family of investment funds with more than US$14.4bn of assets under management. For more than 30 years it has been acquiring manufacturing businesses and its current portfolio includes component maker Autokiniton, light vehicle manufacturer AM General, Briggs and Stratton engines, battery maker C&D Technologies, and plant-based foods business Primient.

Antony Sheriff, chief executive of Princess Yachts, said the deal will enable the Plymouth firm, the UK’s largest manufacturer of luxury yachts, to grow and bring out new models. He said: “We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts. KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the company’s future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts.

“With a current order book nearing a record US$1bn and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position. Together with KPS’ tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation. Under KPS’ ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history.”

KPS’ portfolio of companies already generates total annual revenues of about US$22bn, operates 232 manufacturing facilities in 27 countries and combined has about 53,000 employees. KPS said it creates value “almost exclusively through operational and performance improvement”.

Ryan Harrison, a partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said: “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range, and world-wide reputation for quality and innovation. KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future. We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, chief executive Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team, and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Princess Yachts was acquired by L Capital 2 FCPR, an investment group co-sponsored by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) and Groupe Arnault in 2008. In January 2016, L Capital merged with Catterton to become L Catterton, now recognised as the largest global consumer-focused investment firm.

Last year L Catterton hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer for Princess Yachts . At the time, Princess Yachts told PlymouthLive it was looking to start discussions with potential investors to provide financial support needed to build a huge new factory at its Devonport operation.

In late 2021, PlymouthLive revealed Princess Yachts wants to build another factory in Plymouth’s freeport area in the South Yard so it can produce more vessels, employ more people and fulfil a US$1bn order book. The company was also undergoing a sales boost, now selling more than 300 boats annually.

A record year for Princess Yachts

The british superyacht-manufacturing stalwart has announced record breaking financial results, a strong order book and a thriving apprenticeship scheme….

Image for article A record year for Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts has today announced record financial results, plus new records for yacht sales and employment at its Plymouth headquarters. The 2018 results signal the British manufacturer’s most successful year in its illustrious 54-year history. Financial results for the year ending 31 December 2018 show turnover of £340.3m (up £65m/24 per cent on 2017) and record opening project before exceptionals of £29.8m (up £10.9/173 per cent). EBITDA for 2018 was £32.8m up from £14.9m in 2017.

“I am really proud of what the Princess team has achieved in 2018. Their focus and dedication enabled Princess to build on the previous two years of solid financial figures and beat 2017’s record results,” comments Antony Sheriff, executive chairman of Princess Yachts. “The team launched six stunning new luxury yachts while growing revenues to over one third of a billion pounds.”

In 2018 Princess hit a record high for employment of 3,200. Recruitment has taken place across the business from engineering to exterior design, manufacturing to management, making Princess one of the UK’s largest specialist manufacturers. Princess also increased investment in is successful apprenticeship programme with 40 new apprentices brought into the business; apprentices now make up four per cent of the workforce with a 100 per cent retention rate following qualification.

Traditionally, the superyacht industry has been poor at educating governments and investors at quite how effective it can be as an employer and economic contributor. The success of Princess business model and its flourishing apprenticeship scheme is a testament to how the superyacht community can contribute to the wider community.

“These strong financial figures will enable us to build upon our unique, highly integrated infrastructure in Plymouth and invest even more in advanced technologies, new yachts and quality levels across design and production,” continues Sheriff. “We continue to forge ahead in our vision to be not just the highest quality, most innovative and successful luxury yacht manufacturer in the world, but also a great British employer.”

“It’s fantastic to see these latest figures from Princess Yachts," comments Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine. "The sector has recently celebrated its sixth consecutive year of growth, so it’s safe to say demand for UK manufactured luxury yachts is at an all-time high. We are proud that the UK remains an international hub for expertise and craftsmanship, particularly during uncertain economic times.”

According to The Superyacht Agency, Princess Yachts has delivered an average of 3.1 vessels per year since 2011. Since 2015, however, the British superyacht-manufacturing stalwart has delivered an average of four vessels per year and, if Princess’ order book proves to be accurate, the yard will have its most prolific year to date in 2019 with eight vessels scheduled for delivery.

Plymouth's Princess Yachts reveals record billion dollar order book

UK's largest luxury boat builder says it is selling yachts faster than it can make them as it recovers strongly from Covid hit 2020

The UK’s largest luxury boat builder Princess Yachts has revealed a US$1bn order book and said production is struggling to keep up with demand.

The Plymouth manufacturer’s financial update has revealed a “record-setting commercial performance” with sales rate surpassing production rate, driving record low distributor stock levels.

It said almost all production through to the end of 2022 and more than 60% of 2023 production is already covered by orders. This year it has already sold 20 of its flagship Superfly X95 and has 57 orders for the new Y72 model which launched this summer.

More about Princess Yachts

The company is now poised for further growth with the new Y95, X80,and V50 already in production, as well as five further new model launches by the end of 2022.

And, despite being in a Covid-19 recovery phase, intensive recruitment continues with increased investment in skills training and award-winning apprenticeship programmes.

The firm, which employs about 3,200 people in Plymouth, said it has faced challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing supply chain issues affecting the UK. Turnover and profits dipped in 2020 as the company was affected by a temporary Covid-related closure.

But it has bounced back strongly and despite ongoing challenges retail sales have grown to the highest levels in the history of the company, with an order book exceeding US$bn.

With record low distributor stock levels globally - equivalent to one to two weeks of stock - and production almost completely covered by orders into the second half of 2023, the company said it is in a unique commercial position.

Antony Sheriff, Princess Yachts executive chairman and chief executive, said: “As expected, in a Covid-19 year when we stood down our 3,200 strong team for Q2 2020, turnover reduced to £244m from 2019’s full year turnover of £314m.

“The combination of our unique vertically integrated manufacturing process, the investment required to make it Covid-19 compliant and our decision to not cut new product development or make staff redundant resulted in an understandable drop in profits during 2020.

“However, these decisions have put us in an excellent position during 2021 and onwards. Although Covid-19 continues to bring interruptions in the supply chain and government mandated self-isolation of staff, we significantly improved financial performance in 2021 compared to 2019 and 2020 and we expect even stronger results in 2022 .”

We have had over 20 orders for the X95, and 57 orders for the new Y72 model, the majority of these orders received off plan. All production slots are now filled for 2021, over 95% of 2022 production and over 60% of 2023 production is covered by orders.”

A return to many of the global boat shows this calendar year saw Princess Yachts attend Palm Beach International Yacht Show in March 2021; Cannes Yachting Festival 2021; Southampton International Boat Show 2021; with plans being finalised for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in October 2021 and the much-anticipated return to Boot Düsseldorf in January 2022.

Princess delivers record financial results

Princess experiences the highest sales in its 53-year history and announces new models for 2019

Princess Yachts delivered record-breaking results in 2017 and has advance orders totalling more than $1 billion (approx. £750 million).

Financial results for the 12 months to 31 December 2017 show record turnover of £274.4 million which is over 25% up on the previous year. Operating profit is up to £7.9m, a turnaround of £15 million on its 2016 results.

Princess’s executive chairman Anthony Sheriff, who was previously at McLaren, also took the opportunity to announce some key new models for 2019 including the 85 Motor Yacht, which will be launched at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in January, and an all-new 45ft flybridge that will hit the water at the end of this year.

Sheriff also promised that the technology developed in conjunction with Ben Ainslie Racing Technology would not be restricted to the new R35 sportsboat due to launch at the end of this year.

“The R35 is a landmark boat for Princess but it is not a one off,” he says, “you will see the technology used on this boat expanding to other new models under development.”

Commenting on the Plymouth yard’s financial performance Sheriff says: “This has been a landmark year in the history of Princess. We have a clear vision to be the highest quality, most innovative and best luxury yacht producer in the world and it is gratifying to our highly skilled and dedicated 2,700-strong team that the market has responded in tune with our efforts.

“With our exciting launch plan this year of unique and exceptional yachts, coupled with our unprecedented $1 billion order book which stretches well into 2019, 2018 is set to be another record year in sales and profits for Princess Yachts.”

In 2016 the executive board, with approval from shareholders, committed to £100 million of investment across product, facilities and staff over five years.

The company has intentionally kept the supply of boats below demand in order to build the order book, with production slots for 2018 98% sold and 68% filled in 2019.

Ferretti Group has also announced strong financial results for the same period with double-digit growth and a new investment plan.

The yard’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) of €59 million is up 11% compared to 2016 and net profit in 2017 reached €24 million, up 71% on the previous year.

Carlos Peralta Quintero is the Chairman and CEO of Grupo IUSA, was listed by CNNExpansión among Mexico’s 100 top businessmen in 2013. The Princess Mariana is now renamed Pegasus V and it has a length of 78.60 m (257.9 ft), beam of 14.40 m (47.2 ft) and draft of 4.50 m (14.8 ft). princess mariana superyacht 2

Pegasus V (formerly The Princess Mariana) mega yacht is fitted out with every luxury possible!  There is a 13 seat cinema, a helipad, and a golf driving range.  One of the most impressive features is definitely the  Beach Club.  This is a dry dock which is where the tender lives – when the tender is outside, the dock can be filled with water to create a 12m swimming pool with underwater lighting! The starboard hull also lowers to form a spacious sun bathing area with steps into the water, sun beds and deckchairs and tables! Another fantastic feature of this yacht is its “party deck”. This deck consists of two bars, a raised dance floor, three cinema screens, a Grand Piano, a spa pool, casual seating areas and sun beds. With features such as these, no wonder it is considered one of the biggest and best charter yachts. There are six luxurious staterooms on board including a luxury owner’s stateroom, and five other guest rooms. All are appointed superbly and offer complete comfort and luxury to the guests.

The Princess Mariana Superyacht was built in Denmark by Royal Denship in 2003,  Princess Mariana  was designed by Espen Oeino and features a beautiful interior by Francois Zuretti.

Who is Mike Lynch? A look at the British tech tycoon missing from a sunken yacht in Sicily

He's been called the british version of microsoft co-founder bill gates or apple co-founder steve jobs, by michael liedtke | the associated press • published august 20, 2024 • updated on august 20, 2024 at 2:08 pm.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch, one of six people missing from a sunken yacht off Sicily , had been trying to move past a Silicon Valley debacle that had tarnished his legacy as an icon of British ingenuity.

Lynch, 59, struck gold when he sold Autonomy, a software maker he founded in 1996, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. But the deal quickly turned into an albatross for him after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale and fired by HP’s then-CEO Meg Whitman.

He was cleared of criminal charges in the U.S. in June, but still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London.

A decade-long legal battle had resulted in his extradition from the U.K. to face criminal charges of engineering a massive fraud against HP, a company that helped shape Silicon Valley's zeitgeist after starting in a Palo Alto, California, garage in 1939.

Lynch steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling — a position he maintained while testifying before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco earlier this year. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove allegations that Lynch engaged in accounting duplicity that bilked billions of dollars from HP.

The trial ended up vindicating Lynch and he pledged to return to the U.K. and explore new ways to innovate.

Mike Lynch-backed legal tech startup Luminance raises $40 million, capitalizing on AI hype

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced the civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

Before becoming entangled with HP, Lynch was widely hailed as a visionary who inspired descriptions casting him as the British version of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Lynch, a Cambridge-educated mathematician, made his mark running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Autonomy's steady growth during its first decade resulted in Lynch being awarded one of the U.K's highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

In the months leading up to the deal that would go awry, HP valued Autonomy at $46 billion, according to evidence presented at Lynch's trial.

The trial also presented contrasting portraits of Lynch. Prosecutors painted him as an iron-fisted boss obsessed with hitting revenue targets, even if it meant resorting to duplicity. But his lawyers cast him as entrepreneur with integrity and a prototypical tech nerd who enjoyed eating cold pizza late at night while pondering new ways to innovate.
