On a bright sunny day, the 295-foot Lürssen superyacht Ice slammed into an anchored motoryacht in Turkey’s Bodrum Bay. Commissioned by a Russian oligarch, the $125 million mammoth, due to a locked rudder, collided with a pleasure vessel just a third of its size.

For four generations and since 1875, German shipyard Lürssen has been cultivating the most refined skills and advanced technologies to create truly outstanding vessels. When the company founder Friedrich Lürssen said, 'Leading in quality and performance, that should be my company’s reputation,' he was expressing the values the shipbuilding family of Lürssen upholds to this day.

From then to now, around 13,000 vessels have left Lürssen's docks, each one a true original and a magnificent specimen of its type. These include the world's first boat propelled by an internal combustion engine (1.5hp), launched in 1886, and the world's largest motor yacht at 180m, powered by 94,000hp.

The yachts developed by Lürssen hand in hand with clients, the world’s finest yacht designers and technical advisors span the full spectrum – graceful, bold, poetic, imposing, classic, innovative. Yet as diverse as these individual projects are, they all share one quality: they are shaped by the Lürssen family’s deep knowledge of - and commitment to - custom yacht building.

Shipyard Stories: Peter Lürssen on the Past, Present and Future of Lürssen

Written By: Rachel Ingram

“Once in a while we should allow ourselves, against our better knowledge, to do something really crazy,” says Peter Lürssen, CEO of German boatbuilder Lürssen. “If you do something crazy, it actually may work, and if it doesn’t, it will inspire others to push the limits.”

Peter Lurssen 1200x800

Since 1875, Lürssen has been one of the marine industry’s leading innovators. Manufacturer of the world’s first motorboat, as well as some of the most iconic superyachts in history – Azzam, Limitless and Dilbar to name a few, Lürssen is now run by fourth generation family members who are continuing the legacy set by their great grandparents.

Lürssen was founded in 1875 by Friedrich Lürßen, a 24-year-old German boatbuilder who got into the industry through his father Lüder Lürssen, who also ran a boatbuilding workshop. Friedrich began by building lightweight racing rowboats for Bremen oarsmen which quickly became known for their beautifully design, originality and quality. In 1886, he built the world’s first motorboat, the 6m REMS, for manufacturer Gottlieb Daimler – the company would go on to craft a number of record-breaking champion race boats.

In 1925, when Lürssen celebrated its 50 th anniversary, the company had already built 10,000 boats and the second generation of Lürssens joined the business. They went on to pioneer another series of record-setting yachts, including the world’s fastest commuter yacht and the world’s longest motor yacht at the time, the 36m AAR IV. In the 1940s, the third generation took the helm and began to build larger and larger yachts, including the 55m yacht Pegasus II and the 71m Carinthia VI, designed by legendary British yacht designer Jon Bannenberg.

Founder Friedrich Lurssen 1200x800

Lürssen was founded in 1875 by Friedrich Lürßen

With the fourth generation came a shift in focus to two types of boats: military vessels and megayachts. A number of icons came out of the growing shipyard, including the 97m Limitless (1997); the 180.65 Azzam (2013) the longest yacht in the world, the 156m Dilbar (2016), then the largest yacht in the world by gross tonnage. More recent deliveries, including AHPO, Nord and Moon Sand, are equally pioneering.

The business is currently being managed by Friedrich and Peter Lürssen, who hold the respective roles of Managing Director and CEO. One of their missions is to balance the company’s heritage while driving future innovation. “ For last 25 years, we have created a large number of yachts and experienced great success,” says Peter Lürssen, who joined the company in 1987. “It is a constant battle because to consistently innovate, you need to stay hungry, and if you experience fairly good times, people tend to get less hungry. We have a client who built multiple ships with us who once said: ‘from success comes arrogance, from arrogance comes failure.’ I think success can create complacency, so we try to keep people hungry by allowing the young people to experiment, dream and come up with really crazy ideas.”

A major part of the company’s pioneering commitment is its new Innovation Laboratory, which will be finalised early 2022. Since 2005, Lürssen has been involved in research projects aimed at using fuel cells on ships in order to advance sustainable shipbuilding, and the laboratory has been set up to simulate and test the integration and operation of a Marine Hybrid Fuel Cell System on board a yacht powered by methanol.

Lurssen Azzam Klaus Jordan 1200x800

While other shipyards have been discussing hydrogen and electric powered yachts, Peter is convinced that methanol in the future. “Hydrogen is hard to produce and store in big quantities, so I don’t necessarily see it as a solution for the long term,” he says. “We have been talking to people who are researching extremely efficient batteries. There are people that say eventually you will have the same energy content in one cubic metre of battery as you have today in diesel fuel . If that's the case, it's great, but you have to completely re-think the way you fuel your boat, and in a green way. You’re not going to be able to park your boat next to a power pack, plug it in and wait half a year till it’s fuelled. So, I think a realistic technology to substantially reduce the footprint today is methanol. At Lürssen, we prefer finding solutions with a practical application and so far, the methanol fuel cell offers a lot of practical use.”

Lürssen is currently building its first yacht with fuel cell technology for one of its particularly pioneering clients. The emission-free fuel cells generate electrical energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol. It’s a huge step towards Peter’s goal of having an emission-free Lürssen yacht, the boat will be able to anchor emission-free for 15 days or cruise 1000 miles at slow speed. “My great grandfather built the world’s first motorboat in 1886, my dream is to be the first to build a yacht without a combustion engine,” Peter says. “While we hope to see some intermediate steps in the next few years, my goal is that by 2025, we have sold a yacht that only has fuel cell technology.”

Lurssen Daimler 1200x800

Another showcase of the modern-day Lürssen’s commitment to sustainability is ALICE, an innovative, climate-neutral yacht concept which “shows what a Lürssen yacht could look like in the future.” The design of the yacht, which would be powered by emission-free fuel cells, is peppered with ecological features that create a unique ecosystem on board, including parks and ponds on the yacht’s deck and living walls in the interior.

“We want to do something that allows sustainable cruising in the ocean,” Peter says. “Yachts have come a long way but there is further to go. I think when I look back in five or 10 years and I have contributed to a substantial reduction in footprint and made yachting cleaner and more eco-friendly, that's enough for me to be a happy man looking back.”

First founded in 1875, German shipyard Lürssen has grown to become one of the world’s leading builders of luxury superyachts. The yard has launched some of the world’s most iconic superyachts, including the 127 metre Octopus , 138 metre Rising Sun and the longest yacht in the world, the 180.61 metre Azzam . In fact, Lürssen currently holds a near-monopoly in the construction of supersized superyachts, having delivered 13 of the world’s top 25. BOAT rounds up the 10 largest superyachts ever built by Lürssen .

Length: 180.61m

Launched in 2013, Lürssen’s 180 metre superyacht Azzam remains the largest yacht in the world . The flagship of the German yard’s fleet, Azzam features exterior design penned by   Nauta Design . Azzam’s impressive propulsion package consists of two gas turbine engines and 2 x MTU diesel engines driving two Wartsila axial flow Modular waterjets and two boosters. Altogether they produce 97,000hp, resulting in a top speed of 33 knots. This means that Azzam is not only the largest yacht in the world but one of the fastest too.

Length: 156m

The 156 metre Dilbar is the largest Lürssen superyacht by volume, with a massive 15,917GT spread across seven decks. Following Dilbar’s delivery in 2016, the yard revealed the yacht claimed two other records – a 180 cubic metre swimming pool believed to be the largest on any yacht, and a 30,000kw diesel-electric power plant. The propulsion package is thought to be the most powerful ever fitted to a superyacht and results in a cruising speed of 22.5 knots. Dilbar features exterior design by Espen Øino with interiors by Winch Design and is currently the fourth longest yacht in the world.

Length : 155m

The 155 metre Al Said , which was delivered in 2008, holds the record as the fifth largest yacht in the world and also includes a cavernous 15,850GT traditionally styled interior designed by RWD . Inside, Al Said offers huge entertaining spaces and accommodation for a total of 65 guests, but the yacht’s standout feature must be its on board concert hall large enough to hold a 50-person orchestra. First delivered in 2008, Al Said’s exterior comes from the boards of Espen Øino .

Length: 147.25m

Previously known as Topaz , the Tim Heywood designed A+ was first delivered in 2012 and is understood to have been previously owned by Middle Eastern royal and politician Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Listed among the largest superyachts in the world, A+  features a helicopter landing pad at its bow and interiors penned by Terence Disdale .

Length: 141.6m

Delivered in 2021, the 141.6 metre Lürssen superyacht Nord was a new entry into the top 25 largest yachts in the world this year. Designed by Nuvolari Lenard, Nord was known as Opus and Project Redwood while in-build and boasts a number of premium superyacht features including a sports and diving centre on the lower deck, a large swimming pool and two superyacht helipads. Nord is accompanied by a fleet of tenders measuring up to 15 metres on its worldwide adventures and features accommodation for 36 guests in 20 staterooms.

Scheherazade

Length: 140m

Lürssen’s 140 metre superyacht Scheherazade is another new entry to the list following delivery in 2020 . Previously known as Project Lightning, Scheherazade features an Espen Øino-designed exterior and four-deck aluminium superstructure. Key exterior features include two large helipads – one at the bow and one on the upper deck – and a prominent beach club aft. Reportedly owned by a Middle Eastern billionaire, this yacht is designed with warmer climates in mind.

Length: 139.29m

Launched in 1999 as the largest yacht in the world, Al Salamah once belonged to Saudi royalty, Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. Designed inside and out by Terence Disdale , Al Salamah features a 12,234GT interior large enough to accommodate a total of 40 guests in 21 staterooms and a further 96 crew members.

Length: 138.01m

Delivered in 2004, Lürssen’s 138 metre Rising Sun was the last yacht to ever come from designer Jon Bannenberg’s drawing board. Originally built for former Oracle CEO Larry Eliison, Rising Sun experimented with extensive use of structural glass, resulting in a clean profile. Now owned by media mogul David Geffen, Rising Sun boasts 8,000 square meters of living space and can accommodate 16 guests and 45 crew members. Other features include a wine cellar and basketball court.

Length: 136m

Famous for being the most expensive charter yacht in the world with a price tag of €3m a week, the 136-metre, six-deck Lürssen yacht Flying Fox features a curving exterior designed by Espen Øino with interiors from Mark Berryman . Among Flying Fox’s premium features are a total of five fireplaces, an in-built irrigation system for the yacht’s array of greenery and the first cryosauna ever installed on a yacht. Elsewhere, Flying Fox is fitted with two galleys – one for crew and one for guests – run by a total of four permanent chefs.

Length : 135.5m

The 135.5 metre Crescent is the tenth biggest Lürssen superyacht in the world and like many on this list boasts the exterior design signature of Espen Øino. Delivered in 2018, Crescent has a 21 metre beam and 9194GT interior volume with styling penned by Francois Zuretti . Other features include a striking black hull with a bulbous bow with a five-deck superstructure.

RECENT LURSSEN YACHT LAUNCHES

2020 has marked an extremely active year for the shipbuilder. The 87m Project HAWAII was seen in the Baltic Sea preforming sea trials after it left the Rendsburg yard. Shortly after that, the German Naval Yard Kiel merged with Lürssen in a joint venture with goals to reinforce the efficiency and sustainability of the German naval shipbuilding industry to compete on a global level. Shortly after the merger the 90m superyacht project 1601 was revealed in Rendsburg. The technical launch of the hull and superstructure mark another great milestone for the German builder. More recently, in June, Lürssen delivered the highly secretive Project LIGHTNING. Details of Project LIGHTNING have been sparse.

LURSSEN YACHT SCHEHERAZADE

The 130-meter (426’ 6”) highly secretive yacht, Project Lightning, now called M/Y SCHEHERAZADE – was delivered early morning on June 1 st , 2020 and made its maiden voyage headed to Norway. Very few details have been released, including designers and architects. The gigayacht features 2 large helipads and a large beach club. The yacht is among the top largest yachts in the world.

LURSSEN Project 1601

The completed hull and superstructure of Project 1601 made a splash at its initial launch on May 26 th in Northern Germany. The exterior design, by Espen Oino, revealed modern features dominated by straight lines, angular corners and planar surfaces.

The interior of Project 1601 is set to be designed by Dölker + Voges. The interior characteristics will mirror the modern exterior. Project management throughout the build will be managed by Cornelsen & Partner.

After the launch, the yacht entered Lürssen’s floating dock and will not be seen again until 2021. At the same facility in Rendsburg, another Lürssen build, Project 13800, was seen closer to completion as delivery for 13800 is set for Spring of 2021. The state-of-the-art shipyard was originally established in 1877, and acquired by Lürssen in 2016. It covers an area of 451,000m 2 and features one of the largest graving docks in northern Europe. Our Bremen facilities, with a total area of 198,700m 2 , are fully equipped for sophisticated conversions, refits and maintenance projects. Located directly on the Kiel Canal, which links the North and Baltic Seas, Lürssen Rendsburg specializes in refits and maintenance of smaller-to-mid-sized yachts.

Welcoming communities

Germany’s largest port, Hamburg has a grand maritime tradition reaching back many centuries. As a seafaring city, Hamburg is open to the world and has a colourful international community. Our Hamburg shipyard, one of the seafront’s dominating features, is in easy walking distance from shops, bars and outstanding restaurants offering local and international cuisine. Bremen, though smaller, is no less steeped in international seafaring tradition. Its history of maritime trade is reflected in the stately Hanseatic buildings surrounding the Market Square. The cosy town of Rendsburg on the river Eider became accessible to larger ships in the late 19th century, when the Kiel Canal was completed.

lurssen yachts jobs

One of the premier shipyards in Europe, Lürssen is a trusted name in yacht building. The brand is renowned for its  new construction yachts  that are as beautiful as they are powerful, functional and innovative. Since 1875, the Lürssen family has dedicated itself to building the most impressive vessels on the water. The philosophy born more than a century ago that yachts from Lürssen would be both of the highest quality and the best performance lives on today. The firm’s deep-rooted connection to shipbuilding and German seafaring excellence is evident in every hull launched by the renowned builder. All Lürssen yachts are custom built to owners’ specifications with an uncompromising dedication to quality and style. Lürssen builds yachts from 164 feet (50m) in length to larger than 590 feet (180m). Lürssen’s advanced craftspeople, technicians, naval architects and specialized engineers collaborate flexibly with one another and yacht owners to create bold, poetic works of art.

Lurssen Yachts Heritage

Lürssen was founded in 1875 by Friedrich Lürssen who trained as a boatbuilder to work alongside his father in the boatyard. His father encouraged Friedrich to open his own yard and on June 27, Friedrich opened the doors to his boatbuilding workshop in Aumund, near Bremen, Germany. The first yacht built by Lürssen boasted both quality and originality; these two traits have become hallmarks of the Lürssen brand.

The Lürssen moniker originally built racing rowboats for Bremen oarsmen, but as time passed, the word about the impressive quality of Lürssen’s builds spread. Orders began coming in from all over Germany as the builder acquired a reputation for boats that were built to the highest possible standards with outstanding craftsmanship.lurssen yacht project at dock outside lurssen shipyard in germany

In 1886 Lürssen then changed the game by building the world’s first motorboat. A special commission by Gottlieb Daimler, an inventor and engine manufacturer who wanted to test his engines on the water, the 19-foot (6m) REMS was built and thus a new legacy for Lürssen was born.

As the demand for Lürssen-built crafts grew, the yard needed to expand. By the turn of the 20th century, the Lürssen yard was able to access open water directly thanks to the yards new site in Bremen-Vegesack. Another early 20th-century feat was the launch of Lürssen’s DONNERWETTER racing speedboat that was able to reach up to 35 knots courtesy of its 40hp engine. It was at this same time that Friedrich Lürssen’s son Otto joined the family business. He came to the firm with a shipbuilding engineering background, a high level of craftsmanship and new technical expertise. Otto was dedicated to improving methods to elevate the brand’s quality of craft further. This spirit of innovation and emphasis on quality remains today.

Throughout the proceeding 50 years, Lürssen enjoyed continued successes. The LÜRSSEN-DAIMLER became a racing champion, the OHEKA II set new standards of speed; with her the Maybach engines that allowed her to achieve a top speed of 34 knots, she became the world’s fastest commuter yacht and the 118-foot (36m) AAR IV was the world’s longest motor yacht. During this time, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary and sadly said goodbye to Otto, but his wife Frieda took the helm of the company, continuing its success. Eventually, Otto’s and Frieda’s sons Gert and Fritz-Otto came aboard and delivered the impressive 180-foot (55m) PEGASUS II.

In 1971 Lürssen again changed the game with the CARINTHIA VI. A 232-foot (71m) luxury yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg — his first major yacht project — the CARINTHIA VI raised the bar for modern styling and created a signature look that can still be seen in the Lürssen yachts of today.

Lürssen continues to build the world’s most advanced and stylish luxury yachts

The Lurssen Mega Yacht Fleet

In the 1980s the fourth generation of Lürssens, Friedrich and Peter, joined the company, continuing the strong family heritage. The firm also moved its production to Lemwerder. Lürssen then took over Kröger Werft, which had docks on the Kiel Canal near Rendsburg. This allowed the firm to specialize in building yachts between 197 feet (60m) and 360 feet (110m) and begin refit and conversion work. The Lürssen yards were operating at 90 percent capacity with navy contracts and so the firm decided to split production between yacht and navy building.

By the 1990s Lürssen yachts were renowned around the world as the top-tier of luxury. The brand delivered the 318-foot (97m) megayacht LIMITLESS, designed by Jon Bannenberg, in 1997. The 2000s meant more yard acquisitions for Lürssen as it purchased the Neue Jadewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven on the German North Sea where the brand could work on repairs and conversions of vessels up to 492 feet (150m) long. The Lürssen name has attracted the world’s top yacht designers for decades. In 2012, two of these renowned designers, Tim Heywood and Terence Disdale, styled the interior and exterior of 483-foot (147.25m) yacht TOPAZ. That same year the Norderwerft shipyard in Hamburg was acquired by the Lürssen Group and in 2013 the Peene Werft shipyard in Wolgast, Germany, also joined the firm. Throughout this time, the brand continued to build and deliver the world’s most impressive yachts. In 2013, Lürssen delivered the 592-foot (180.65m) AZZAM, which was at the time the world’s largest yacht. She also reached incredible speeds of 30 knots — a true feat for her size. The build took only three years, which set another impressive bar for the builder. Two-thousand-sixteen saw another impressive delivery: DILBAR, a 512-foot (156m) luxury superyacht was the largest yacht in terms of gross tonnage. At 15,917-tons, she offered a level of amenities never before seen on a yacht. She boasted the most state-of-the-art technology and was delivered in just 52 months.

Building a Lurssen Yacht

Lürssen continues to build the world’s most advanced and stylish luxury yachts. Its impressive heritage and dedication are second to none.

“Lürssen yachts truly are some of the most impressive built. Lürssen promises service anytime, anywhere and not only provides comprehensive scheduled or unscheduled onsite support to replace worn or damaged components of its yachts. Lürssen also provides a range of crew training courses. The brand also takes optimum care of the representatives, design teams and crew during projects, ensuring they have a comfortable and enjoyable time throughout the build or refit process. Lurssen is Environmentally Conscious

The Lürssen family has a deep respect for the sea and consistently applies environmentally friendly tactics to its yacht-building process. Its superyachts have greater fuel efficiency and decreased soot, CO2 and noise emissions. Lürssen also is the first yacht builder to make extensive use of engine and generator waste heat to operate the ship’s onboard desalination drinking water system. The brand continues to invest in research and development that promote sustainability and energy technologies such as hybrids and fuel cells. Lürssen is proud to contribute to the Blue Marine Foundation, a marine biodiversity conservation organization.

“Lürssen yachts for charter are some of the most sought-after on the charter market,” says Northrop & Johnson charter broker Fiona Maureso .  “This is because of the quality of the yachts and the amenities available on board. Lürssen yachts are state-of-the-art, but they also are timeless. Clients understand the level of excellence they will receive when they step aboard a Lürssen superyacht. This level of superiority is something clients have come to expect of charter yachts from the brand.”

Lürssen is proud to have built some of the most impressive yachts in the world. Some of these include the 403-foot (123m) AL LUSAIL, the 508-foot (155m) AL SAID, the 456-foot (139m) AL SALAMAH, the 592-foot (180m) AZZAM, the 511-foot (156m) DILBAR, the 403-foot (123m) GOLDEN ODYESSY, the 454-foot (138m) RISING SUN and the 483-foot (147m) TOPAZ to name a few. Lürssen also is extremely proud of the yachts in its 50-to-90-meter range; which represent the brand’s core business. The 196-foot (60m) OASIS, 206-foot (63m) POLAR STAR, 278-foot (85m) SOLANDGE and the 311-foot (95m) KISMET are examples of yachts in this incredible range and are not only impressively built and beautiful, but also renowned as some of the most prominent in the global fleet.

Lürssen is a family-owned yacht builder, deeply steeped in tradition with its foot firmly planted in the future. For more information on Lürssen yachts for sale, a new build Lürssen, or to charter a Lürssen , contact your preferred  Northrop & Johnson  broker.
