A Look at the Hylas 49
Hylas 49 review.
Few yachts in the high-quality semi-custom performance cruising class can compare to the Hylas 49 design for those looking for the ultimate in comfort, safety, and ease of handling for cruising and live aboard. When you combine the talents and experience of the world-renowned Sparkman & Stephens design firm with the established quality Hylas building team, special yachts are possible. The Hylas 49 is one of the best examples of proven and highly regarded yachts in their class, and ready to cruise anywhere in the world. Known for superb sailing characteristics and comfortable living arrangements, the Hylas 49 is also constructed for bluewater passagemaking.
Fast, strong, sea-kindly hull design. Solid FRP fiberglass construction with 8 longitudinal stringers to A.B.S. standards. The deck is bonded to the hull with 5200 epoxy and thru bolted every 5". The modified fin keel is solid lead with 35 mm stainless steel keel bolts with transverse mounted 8 mm backing plates and is fully encapsulated. The full skeg protected rudder provide excellent directional stability. The bottom of the rudder skeg is higher than the low point of the keel in cases of accidental grounding. Most feature Selden In-Mast Electric furling main with an aluminum anodized mast with double spreaders and 1x19 Hasselford wire standing rigging with Staylock mechanical fittings, discontinuous rigging design, including forward and aft lowers, for optimal strength.
The spacious three stateroom accommodation plan includes a large private aft master stateroom with ensuite head, two comfortable guest cabins forward with second head, large salon and galley, and a proper navigation center. The Hylas 49 design boasts one of the best galley designs of any similarly sized boat. The galley is over 8 feet in length and, given its location in the walkthrough, it naturally provides security in rough seas. There are ample cabinets, lockers, drawers, a full-length pantry, and a slide-out trash bin.
The exquisite varnished teak interior woodwork has many attractive joinery details. Most have a teak and holly cabin sole with late models featuring a lighter option of bamboo with contrasting inlay. The soles are laid on sub-flooring are Epoxy urethane coated with 7 layers of varnish, Epoxy sealed endgrains and feature positive locking pieces for offshore passagemaking.
Few yachts in the high-quality semi-custom performance cruising class can compare to the Hylas 49 design for those looking for the ultimate in comfort, safety and ease of handling for cruising and live aboard. The Hylas 49 is one of the most desired boats in their class. The most well kept of the brokerage Hylas 49’s sell in a very short period and tend to maintain their value better than most. For buyers considering a Hylas 49 time is of the essence when preparing to make an offer as these boats spend little time on the brokerage market – and for a very good reason.

Hylas 49 is a 48 ′ 10 ″ / 14.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Hylas Yachts USA and Queen Long Marine starting in 1992.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Hylas 49
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.
Unknown keel type
The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.92 - 2.02 meter (6.30 - 6.60 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 75 hp (55 kW).
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Hylas 49 is about 438 kg/cm, alternatively 2453 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 438 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 2453 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Anyone sailed one? What did you think of the performance? How easy is it to handle short handed? This is the first boat both the husband and I like at first glance. No, we aren't planning on changing boats now but if we decide to change boats in 3-4 years that will impact some of our refitting decisions. Thanks!
I saw your thread on Anything Sailing . The internet is an amazing place, eh? You will get a lot of people saying "sailed one, it was 100% perfection." The 47/49 has a cult following. I think you (and anyone else out there) would enjoy this story about the first 49 . The 49 is smooth performance wise. She has a more classic hull shape than the Frers designs for a real comfortable ride. She is safe, easy to single hand especially with electric furling. Points high. Docking is tricky alone without a thruster. But she is basically a 30 year old Sparkman & Stephens design, so her underbody is outdated, specifically the long keel with extra whetted surface. I have heard 54 owners derisively call 49's slow. The Frers designs are faster. But for serious, long distance offshore sailing, I will trade speed for comfort. Depends on where on this blue planet you dream to go? Have a great day.
I own Hylas 49 #57. Took delivery in late 2007. The S&S underbody is what sold me (nice sea motion) but the boat is very modern in its construction and in materials (Tworon hull if you want it). I wanted a boat that did not pound and despite what people say about the 54 being too big to pound, I believe any flat bottomed, fin keeled boat will. The Frer's designs are faster, but its a nice cruising boat and not slow by any measure. My wife and I usually sail it and its easy with electric winches to sail it with just us. Let me know if you need any other information. I was there in Taiwan to see it built so I can tell you about its construction and have lots of pictures of the process. Rick Hylas 49-057 Black Diamond Portsmouth, RI.
Thanks for the opinions! Rick, what was your experience with the factory? I'm just now not really impressed as I requested information a month ago and still have not received a thing! Edited to add: We are planning on the Bahamas and after that- well, it depends on how the crew as a whole feels. It might be that we just head over to Europe (where we will live full time) or we might go- elsewhere. Not to definitive on our plans just now. We plan on reevaluating out current boat after a year of cruising but if we do think we want to move up, that will impact some of our refit choices.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
