It was a winning drive that led 23-year-old Bisciotti to Aerotek, a staffing company in the aerospace and technology sectors, with his cousin Jim Davis.

The son of a truck driver from Quebec relied on his science degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering and $7,500 from family and friends in 1983 to start his natural gas drilling company. The 73-year-old made a fortune in oil and gas before transforming it into a sports empire that includes the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. The father of famous professional tennis player Jessica Pegula saw many highs, but the one we like most is the $75 million Royal Hakvoort vessel named after the owner’s five kids. The tycoon, worth $10.8 billion according to Forbes, has shown the world how to have a fun time with family when you can splurge $500,000 per week.

5. Stanley Kroenke, Los Angeles Rams – Aquila yacht, 281 feet-

This 77-year-old sports mogul has been honing his business acumen since childhood. Raised in Mora, Missouri, he started sweeping floors at his father’s lumber yard and managing the company’s books by age ten. After earning his MBA in 1973, he met Wal-Mart heiress Ann Walton in Aspen and married her a year later. In 1985, he launched his own real estate development company, and by 1994, he ventured into sports team ownership. With a net worth of $16.9 billion, the billionaire now commands an impressive portfolio, including the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, and the U.K.’s Arsenal soccer club. A major landowner, with over 1.6 million acres of ranches across the U.S. and Canada also owns the majestic Aquilla superyacht with his wife, Walmart heiress Ann Walton.

4. Arthur Blank, Atlanta Falcons – Dreamboat, 295 feet

This 81-year-old New York-born businessman founded Home Depot after being fired from a hardware store. As it turned out, this setback led to a revolutionary success, transforming the home improvement industry and making the Babson Institute graduate a billionaire . Worth $9.1 billion today, the father of nine from three marriages retired as Home Depot’s co-chairman in 2001 and purchased the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons for $545 million in 2002. He also commissioned the massive ‘DreAMBoat,’ highlighting his initials (Arthur Morris Blank), built by Oceanco with interiors designed by Terence Disdale.

3. Daniel Snyder, Washington Commanders – Lady S, 305 feet

Snyder is an enterprising businessman worth $4.5 billion who, as a 20-year-old college dropout, made his first million leasing jets to fly college students to spring break in Fort Lauderdale and the Caribbean. The 59-year-old operated that business out of his parents’ apartment. With a successful business called Snyder Communications, he had enough wealth to buy the NFL’s Washington Commanders for $750 million in 1999. Ten years later, the boy who mopped the floors at the cafeteria inside the National Institutes of Health as a high school student splurged on a whopping $192 million yacht, Lady S.

2. Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys – Bravo Eugenia, 358 feet

From co-captaining Arkansas’ 1964 national championship football team to acquiring the Cowboys from H. R. “Bum” Bright for $140 million in 1989 (now valued at a staggering $9 billion), the 81-year-old billionaire worth $14.5 billion has showcased that sports run deep in his veins. His passion extends to art, with a collection that includes masterpieces by Picasso, Renoir, and Matisse. His $225 million Oceanco-built superyacht stands as a testament to luxury, adorned with art, bespoke furniture, and Swarovski details, all reflecting his wife Gene’s exquisite taste.

1. Shahid Khan, Jacksonville Jaguars – Kismet, 400 feet

The poster boy for rags-to-riches tales, billionaire Shahid Khan went from washing dishes for $1.20 an hour to taking delivery of one of 2024’s largest yachts. The $360 million superyacht Kismet , meaning ‘destiny,’ is a lavish Lürssen vessel that comes with exciting features like a Balinese spa, a gym, two movie theaters, and three swimming pools. The Reymond Langton-designed floating palace, dubbed a cathedral of design in his own words, is a huge leap from a teenage migrant boy grinding away in a YMCA kitchen.

Frank Fertitta III, Former UFC owner – Viva, 308 feet-

The fabulous Feadship mammoth, the Viva yacht , which won accolades like Motoryacht of the Year in 2022, deserves a mention despite her owner, Frank Fertitta III, having sold his stake to an investment group led by WME/IMG for $4 billion in 2016.

Shon & Sharyn Craig and 164 (50m) Trinity Superyacht AMARULA SUN

Owners of the 164-foot (50m) luxury superyacht AMARULA SUN, Shon & Sharyn Craig purchased the 2007 Trinity just over two years ago, but their first foray into the world of yachts larger than 82 feet was a well-equipped 2011 130-foot (40m) Westport, which they purchased four years ago. They traded in the newly-built 2011 80 Hatteras for the Westport only eight months after delivery, realizing it was too big for use as a coastal boat. They then found themselves in a go-big-or-go-small predicament.

So, Shon and Sharyn decided to go big…and they haven’t looked back. They had always wanted to visit the coastal cities of the Mediterranean . They also decided to take on their first venture in the charter market. The Westport was a huge risk, but that risk paid off. They were able to, in only the first year, charter the yacht for 10 weeks and spend more than 60 days aboard, visiting ports in Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Sardinia, Corsica and Greece.

The Craigs continued to use, and charter, their Westport in the Caribbean and The Bahamas for several seasons after. They weren’t exactly looking to move on from their Westport, but when the Trinity yacht, formerly MINE GAMES, went on the market, it came with an offer the Craigs couldn’t refuse. Since 2003, there have been 12 boats named AMARULA SUN, four of which — including the Trinity, a 41-foot Bahama, a 68-foot Princess and a 70-foot Viking — the Craigs currently own.

Shon is capable of and insured to operate boats of 82-feet and smaller. He and Sharyn routinely operate the 68-foot Princess and the Bahama 41 on their own for extended cruises or just out to anchor. Annually, they compete in half a dozen fishing tournaments around the Gulf Coast, East Coast and The Bahamas. This past season, they caught the largest blue marlin (605lbs) in the Bermuda Triple Crown.

Shon and Sharyn are probably on the Trinity at least 10 weeks a year, in between charters, and have cruised much of the Caribbean, The Bahamas and the East Coast of the US. You could definitely classify these owners as “very determined boaters.” They love the water and are at home on the ocean. It’s not uncommon to find them out on the hook in a cove on the leeside of the Anclote Key island, which is located less than three miles from, and within sight of, their house — and they may stay out there for two or three days.

The Trinity AMARULA SUN has a special appeal to the Craigs. Although Shon and Sharyn love to cook for themselves, having a world-class chef on board provides for a pleasant surprise at every meal. After a great day of touring, watersports, exploring, socializing or just plain “hanging out,” Shon and Sharyn relish their options: to dress up for an elegant dinner at the artistically designed and decorated salon table, to have an intimate candlelight meal at the settee on the skydeck or to just throw on some pajamas and have dinner on the couch and watch a great movie in the skylounge. They turn in to the soothing sounds of the water lapping against the hull. After, in the night or early morning, the captain has pulled anchor and motored to the next destination, they wake up to the sights and sounds of a new port, or a new island, and their amazing vacation continues.

In addition to visiting many countries in Europe, the Craigs have traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadine islands, Mexico, Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico and many other beautiful destinations. But their favorites are the BVIs and the Greek islands. They prefer spending the majority of their nights on anchor rather than staying in port; however, they have thoroughly enjoyed amazing and unique ports all over the world.

The 164-foot AMARULA SUN is the second yacht that the Craigs have put in a charter program and they have had great success, first in the Caribbean and then in the Med. Chartering has given them the opportunity to have the boat in desired destinations, semi-funded by the charterer.

The Craigs have a flexible schedule and usually are in a position to pick up and travel to the yacht when she doesn’t have a charter on board. They also enjoy the fact that a few charters a year keep the yacht from sitting in port for too long. This allows the yacht’s systems to remain active and the crew to keep well trained and sharp. Shon says, “I guess you could say that I think the boat and crew are better off active and in use than sitting dormant at a slip in a marina. For those that can only use their boats 10 to 12 weeks a year, chartering 10 to 12 weeks a year is a perfect solution to whatever ails you.”

I'm the captain of a yacht that costs $195,000 a week to charter. I do more than just drive the boat - here's what my job is like.

• He manages the crew and helps keep the boat up to snuff. Here's his story, as told to Jamie Killin.

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Albert Rodriguez, captain of the Amarula Sun, about how he became a yacht captain. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I was practically born on the water, cruising on my father's sportfish - a sport fishing boat - and my uncle's yacht from a very young age. By the time I was 10, I was capable of navigating on my own with just the use of a compass and paper chart.

My passion for the ocean and yachts is what made me pursue a career as a captain.

I've been a US Coast Guard-licensed captain for 25 years and currently hold a 3,000-ton license that allows me to steer ships up to that weight.

I've captained several luxurious yachts throughout my career.

Amarula Sun is a 50-meter yacht that I currently run and have managed for the last eight years.

It's a beautiful yacht with exceptional owners and excellent resources to get the job done. It also has an extensive toy line-up - making it an action-packed charter yacht and one of the best in the industry. I'm very proud and honored to captain this very successful program.

The owners lease it to Fraser Yachts , who then charters it out to people going on vacation - with the cost starting at $195,000 per week.

Being the captain of a yacht brings many jaw-dropping moments.

We had a family that booked a charter for a relaxing vacation and unbeknownst to them, their relatives did the same exact thing on another yacht with a plan to surprise them.

Once their relatives arrived, they coordinated with their crew and ours to dress up like pirates and "invade" the other family's boat. There was a water gun fight between the entire family, and the shock and laughter that ensued led to such a beautiful moment that money truly can't buy.

We've seen the pandemic create a massive yachting boom, as it's become one of the safest vacation options.

Yacht sales through Fraser Yachts are currently up by 136.4% since June of last year, and bookings are up 36%.

So with the rise in bookings, it's also created more opportunities for crew members to work and kept us busy.

I'm currently fully crewed with nine team members and lucky to have a rock-star group. We're very busy with back-to-back charters and owner trips.

A lot of people don't realize that a yacht captain doesn't only drive the boat, which is the fun part of the job.

They also start each day by meeting with the heads of departments - first officer, chief stew, and engineer - to plan the start of a safe, productive day.

The most difficult part of my job is managing personnel crew. Having crew members with different nationalities and personalities living for an extended period of time in a confined place comes with its challenges, but it's always rewarding at the end of a successful charter.

Most of the crew lives on board full time during peak season, but there's a rotation system which allows us to take a well-deserved vacation when needed.

Managing the operations of a large yacht is very complex.

For example, I need to manage the compliance of flag and class regulations, budget, accounting, personnel, and owner's and charter's schedule.

We're a Jamaican Flag, which means the yacht is registered in Jamaica and that we must comply with the regulations enforced by the respective state. It ensures we're running a safe vessel, and we get inspected by a flag surveyor annually. We're currently able to charter in the Bahamas .

We're an ABS Class (American Bureau of Shipping). Class regulates the mechanical side of things and also oversees that the vessel is kept up to standard. ABS also inspects the vessel annually. The history of Flag and Class surveys helps hold the value of the vessel.

A great captain is someone who puts safety first, maintains a meticulous yacht, manages the owner's funds as if it were their own, and always makes sure owners and charter guests have an extraordinary experience and can't wait to come back when they depart.

My career is a dream come true.

50m Trinity motor yacht Amarula Sun sold

The 50 metre motor yacht Amarula Sun has been sold in-house by Galati Yacht Sales with Captain Albert Rodriguez representing the seller.

Built in aluminium by American shipyard Trinity Yachts , Amarula Sun was delivered in 2008 and has received numerous updates throughout her life. She underwent a mechanical refit in 2014 with electronics and audiovisual upgrades the following year and a full overhaul of her generators in 2018 alongside a complete paint job. 

Amarula Sun offers accommodation for up to 12 guests across nine staterooms with room for a crew of nine. A split-level master suite can be found forward on the main deck offering 180-degree views out to sea. All other guest cabins reside on the lower deck, comprised of three king-sized cabins and one twin.

A classic and highly detailed interior by Patrick Knowles features hand-polished American cherry panelling, maple burl and Bubinga woods throughout, complemented by hand-forged black iron railings with gold accents, intricate marble detailing and hand-painted murals overhead in the main saloon, formal dining area and skylounge.

At the heart of the vessel, the main saloon benefits from a large L-shaped sofa with four plush armchairs while the sky lounge above offers a more relaxed lounging option, complete with a bar, games table and surround sound system for movie nights on board.

Other highlights include a sundeck with an eight-person spa pool, with sun pads, a nearby bar, and there's even a television. All meals can be enjoyed al fresco on the upper aft deck with dining for up to 12 guests.

Power comes from a pair of Caterpillar 3516B-HD diesel engines delivering a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Amarula Sun was asking $18,900,000.
